The Traffic Point System in Arizona
Getting a traffic ticket might not seem like a big deal—but in reality, it can have a big impact on your driving privileges. A guilty plea in a traffic violation case can lead to more than fines, as disturbing as those are in their own right. Traffic violations also mean points on your driving record.
The traffic point system in Arizona is designed to keep our roadways safe, but it also means that drivers should not just casually accept whatever tickets they receive without at least exploring their legal options.
Law Offices of Patrick Alan Moran, LLC has served drivers here in Tucson and throughout Pima, Santa Cruz, Pinal, Graham, Cochise, and Maricopa counties since 2003. Our founder has experience as a public defender, in private criminal defense practice, and as a Justice of the Peace. This wide-ranging background gives him good insights into the most constructive ways to proceed with contesting your ticket.

How Points Are Distributed
Each offense gets a certain number of points put on your record. They are distributed as follows:
- 3 points: Speeding, along with driving or parking in a gore area
- 4 points: Failure to stop or yield, resulting in an injured party
- 6 points: Failure to stop or yield, resulting in the death of another party, and hit-and-run
- 8 points: Driving under the influence and reckless driving
Other moving violations will typically result in 2 points on your record.
As points accumulate, you can be subject to having your driver’s license suspended, per the following guidelines:
- 8 to 17 points within a one-year period means a 3-month suspension
- 18 to 23 points within a one-year period means a 6-month suspension
- 25 or more points within a three-year period will result in a 12-month suspension

How Our Lawyer Can Help
Contesting traffic points in Arizona can be a complex process, but having an attorney who understands the process and the system can make a big difference.
The administrative process begins when you receive a notice about a traffic violation. You’ll have the option to respond by attending a hearing or contesting the infraction. Law Offices of Patrick Alan Moran, LLC can assist by examining the details of your case. We might be able to question the validity of the citation and gather evidence that supports your defense. This could include obtaining witness statements, reviewing traffic camera footage, or challenging the calibration of speed detection equipment.
